ROBERT OAKES

Growing up with a passion for all manner of activities connected to the water, it is not surprising Robert was drawn to the marine industry as a profession.  Working in multiple sectors of the marine industry on the BC Coast, Robert gained experience in everything from Fast Response RHIBS to cargo and passenger ships, as well as buoy tending with the Canadian Coast Guard on the Great Lakes.  In addition to the CCGS, employers have included BC Ferries on the southern routes as well as the northern liveaboard runs, eco-tourism companies with most notably as head captain of the historic 1912 converted tugboat MV Swell.  Robert has also worked cargo operations to remote BC coastal communities.  During this time Robert served as deputy station leader and training officer with marine search and rescue.  Robert has a strong coastal knowledge and a working area that spans from Victoria to SE Alaska.

Robert holds a Master 500 GT (Chief Mate 3000GT) and is a marine instructor at Safer Ocean Systems where he helps with new course development and teaches Transport Canada certified courses.

As an instructor, Robert has devoted his life to continually finding more effective ways of reaching his students.  With a formal background in psychology from the University of Manitoba, Robert has incorporated that knowledge on learning styles into his enthusiasm for teaching in the classroom and on the water.  Robert also teaches customized marine courses, and tutors those preparing for Transport Canada examinations.  Past instructional clients have included both government and corporate contracts as well as helping individuals develop their marine skill.
